When choosing tiles for a shower, there are a few factors to consider in order to ensure that you get the best tiles for your needs:

  1. Durability: Choose tiles that are durable and resistant to water and stains, such as ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tiles. Avoid tiles that are prone to scratching or chipping, as they may not hold up well in a shower environment.
  2. Slip resistance: Choose tiles with a rough or textured surface for added slip resistance. This is especially important for the floor of the shower, as it will help prevent falls and accidents.
  3. Maintenance: Consider the maintenance requirements of the tiles you are considering. Some types of tiles, such as natural stone, require more maintenance and sealing to keep them looking their best.
  4. Aesthetics: Choose tiles that match the style and decor of your bathroom. You can choose from a wide range of colors, patterns, and textures to create a look that is unique and personal.
  5. Price: Determine your budget for the project and choose tiles that fit within your price range. Keep in mind that some types of tiles, such as natural stone, may be more expensive than others.

By considering these factors, you can choose the best tiles for your shower and create a beautiful, functional space in your bathroom. As always, be sure to follow all safety precautions and wear protective equipment when working with tools and materials.

Waterproofing a shower with Kerdi

Kerdi is a brand of waterproofing membrane used in the construction of tiled showers. It is made of a flexible, waterproof material that is used to create a barrier between the shower walls and the tiles, preventing water from penetrating behind the tiles and causing damage to the substrate. Here are the steps for installing a Kerdi shower:

  1. Prepare the shower area: Remove any existing tiles and shower fixtures, and make sure the walls are clean, dry, and smooth. If necessary, use a hammer and chisel to remove any stubborn tiles or adhesive. Repair any holes or damage to the walls using joint compound or plaster.
  2. Install the Kerdi membrane: Measure and cut the Kerdi membrane to fit the shower walls, using a straight edge and a utility knife. Starting at the bottom of the shower, apply the membrane to the walls using the manufacturer’s recommended adhesive. Make sure the membrane overlaps the shower floor and extends up the walls at least 2 inches. Use a roller or a trowel to smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles in the membrane.
  3. Install the Kerdi-Band: Measure and cut the Kerdi-Band (a waterproofing strip used to seal the joints between the membrane and the wall) to fit the corners and edges of the shower. Apply the Kerdi-Band to the corners and edges of the shower using the manufacturer’s recommended adhesive, making sure it overlaps the membrane and extends at least 2 inches onto the wall. Use a roller or a trowel to smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles in the Kerdi-Band.
  4. Install the shower fixtures: Once the Kerdi membrane and Kerdi-Band have been installed, you can install the shower fixtures, including the shower head, faucet, and drain. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation.
  5. Install the tiles: Measure and mark the layout of the tiles on the shower walls, using a level and a straight edge to ensure that they are straight and evenly spaced. Mix the thinset mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and apply it to the walls using a notched trowel. Place the tiles onto the mortar, using a rubber float to press them into the mortar. If necessary, cut tiles to fit around corners or fixtures using a wet saw or tile nipper.
  6. Grout the tiles: Once the tiles are in place, mix the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it to the joints between the tiles using a grout float. Wipe off any excess grout with a damp sponge, and allow the grout to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

By following these steps, you can successfully install a Kerdi shower in your bathroom. As always, be sure to follow all safety precautions and wear protective equipment when working with tools and materials.

Choosing a bathroom renovation contractor is an important decision, as the quality of their work can have a significant impact on the success of your project. Here are a few tips to help you choose the best contractor for your bathroom renovation:

  1. Research contractors: Start by researching contractors in your area, and get recommendations from friends, family, and neighbors who have had bathroom renovations done. Look for contractors who are licensed, insured, and have a good reputation in the industry.
  2. Get estimates: Once you have a list of potential contractors, ask each one to provide an estimate for the work you need done. Be sure to ask about any potential additional costs or fees that may come up during the renovation process.
  3. Review their portfolio: Ask to see examples of the contractors’ previous work, either in person or through a portfolio of photos. This will give you an idea of their level of experience and the quality of their work.
  4. Check references: Ask the contractors for references from past clients, and be sure to follow up on these references to get an idea of the contractors’ work ethic and level of customer satisfaction.
  5. Consider communication: Choose a contractor who is responsive and easy to communicate with. You will be working with them closely throughout the renovation process, so it’s important that you feel comfortable talking to them about your ideas and concerns.

By following these tips, you can find a bathroom renovation contractor who is skilled, reliable, and easy to work with, and who can help you create the bathroom of your dreams.
